Rat Baiting.

We source our rat bat at a discounted price, as we are a registered charity.  If you buy from us, here on Waiheke, we pass on the savings to you.  Our current price (at cost) for a 10kg pail, is $150. Please contact Helen on 027 528 6351 if you wish to buy a pail or two.

We are currently sourcing Pestoff Rodent Blocks,  with the active ingredient Brodifacoum 0.002 w/w.  They are extruded solid cereal blocks, dyed green, and contain cereals, sugars, waxes and binders.

Animal Control Products, based in Whanganui, manufactures and sells Pestoff products under the trading name Orillion.  Further information on their products is available at www.pestoff.co.nz,  phone 06 344 5302.  A big thank you to them for their generous discounted pricing.

The hazards classes, for the bait, are 6.9B and 9.1D, but they are not classed as dangerous goods, due to low toxicity.

The blocks have holes in them, for easy securing into the bait station and there are various reasons why it is recommended that rodent blocks should be anchored within a cover:

  • to make sure that the rat eats the poison on the spot. Their instinct is to go off with it to their nest to store it. This is a waste of bait and there is a chance they can drop bits on the way, making it available to other species.

  • to make sure that other animals and birds do not gain access. Some domestic fowls (chickens, ducks etc) find it attractive and we have to keep it from wild creatures also.

  • to keep it safe from domestic pets  (cats, dogs etc). They need to eat quite a lot to suffer damage.  If you are worried, refer to our rat baiting information and consult a vet immediately.

We can order, on your behalf, rat bait stations.  Do contact us if you wish to buy some. We tend to order from:  www.philproof.co.nz

Accidental Poisoning
Please ensure you keep the rat bait out of reach of children at all times.  In the event of accidental human poisoning call a doctor or hospital without delay and seek medical advice.

The active constituent (brodifacoum) is an anti-coagulant chemical, which if taken by humans, domestic animals or pets, will reduce the clotting power of the blood. Nausea and vomiting may occur soon after ingestion, however in some cases effects from exposure may be delayed for several days. Typical overt symptoms of poisoning include bleeding gums, increased tendency to bruising, blood in urine and faeces and excessive bleeding from minor cuts.  Haemorrhagic shock, coma and death may follow in cases of severe poisoning.

The National Poisons Centre is on free phone 0800 764 766 or dial 111 in an emergency.
