What We Do.

The trust performs the following benefits to the Waiheke Community :

 

  • Supply of rat bait and traps for organisations and individuals undertaking pest control

  • Liaise with other environmental organisations on the island

  • Attending public, community and local government forums on pest control

  • Owns a stoat dog – Tāne and attends Dog Detection huis

  • Provide information, advice and education on pest management.

  • Education and information sharing on pest control initiatives on Waiheke

  • Liaison with other environmental and conservation groups on the island

  • Supporting the marketing of pest shooting services

  • Loaning out traps and cages (rat, cat, mouse), trap placement, removal/disposal of pests caught

  • Distributing and baiting rat bait stations

  • Dotterel watch and reporting

  • Penguin watch, reporting to Native Bird Rescue

  • Assisting Forest & Bird with feral cat incursions

  • Taxidermy advice and loan of taxidermy collection for public education

  • Delivery and pick up of educational material

  • Pest collection for analysis and freezer storage in transit to council or Lab

Over the last ten years, to November 2023, we have purchased over $55,000 worth of rat bait and traps, for use on the island.

Incorporated as a Charitable Trust in September 2003, our objective is to control predators of native birds on Waiheke Island.  We are proud to be an independent Waiheke charity, registered under the Charities Act 2005: registration number CC29768.
